No one reads the same book twice

Hey everyone, this is Allan. I want to talk about a concept I discussed with a friend on an online call today: the idea that no one reads the same book twice in exactly the same way. When I read a book three years ago, the Allan of that time was not the same as the Allan I am today. I reread the book in January and got different lessons, extracted different notes, and thought about the same content from a new perspective. Even though the text didn’t change, it felt like a different book because I was looking at it through a different lens.
Why I Re‑Read
I tend to read the same content many times because my memory isn’t great and I forget a lot. Revisiting material helps me absorb it more deeply. I also prefer to understand things at a deeper level rather than just skim.
Depth Over Quantity
If you read twenty books in a year, you might not be absorbing much of each one. Observing that many books is impressive, but my goal isn’t to read as many as possible. I aim to read a set number of pages each day, which works out to about twelve books a year for me. I also read a lot of articles, so books are only part of my learning diet.
Revisiting The 4‑Hour Workweek
The first time I read The 4‑Hour Workweek I thought, “I need to work less; I’m working too much.” Now, looking at the same principles, I see them differently. A few months ago I wasn’t happy with my daily routine, and I thought the solution was to cut my hours dramatically. My situation has improved, and I now focus on extracting more value and meaning from my work rather than simply reducing the number of hours.
Quality Over Hours
I enjoy working many hours because I love coding and building solutions. I don’t want to produce less just to work fewer hours. Instead, I aim for productivity, focus, and high‑quality work. I wouldn’t be satisfied working only four hours a week; I’d be bored. I prefer to work longer days if the work is meaningful and of good quality.
That’s all for today, just a few thoughts I wanted to capture and share. The lesson I’m keeping for myself is that no one reads the same book twice because no one ever stays the same.
