It's just a plugin. It's my client's trust.

You think, “oh that’s just a plugin,” but this plugin is part of something bigger. It is part of how trustworthy my work actually is, so I want to talk a bit about my own work today. Recently I’ve advanced a lot in how I operate daily, mainly because I’m using AI to help me.

Measuring Tasks

When we measure a small task we usually assign it a small value, but that is a trap. Seeing it only as a routine makes its impact invisible when it works. For example, I do maintenance work for WordPress sites that my clients keep rather than migrate. Those tasks are judged by size, not by the weight they have.

The Watcher Plugin

I created a plugin that watches for file changes and emits an alert to me. WordPress sites are often unmaintained and have many gaps. When I start working with clients, those gaps appear, and sometimes admin passwords get leaked, forcing me to fix everything. The plugin is always watching my client’s website. It does more than alert me when malware changes a file; it builds a chain of trust because it helps me keep the site up, which keeps the client’s business running and impacts their customers.

Building Trust

Even small, boring routine tasks are important for delivering value to the client. I am a freelancer providing services to businesses, but my value is delivered to the businesses’ customers. I try to see the whole chain, because that’s how my work is perceived as valuable. A small DNS lookup, a routine document explaining what’s happening with a site, all of these hold up and build the trust my client has in my work.

Lesson Learned

Yesterday a client’s website got malware, and it took two hours from the break-in to containing it on a live site. Noticing the problem quickly is the whole job. In that case the email port was blocked by the server, so I didn’t receive the alerts I rely on. Because I missed the alert, I didn’t notice the issue as fast as I could have. After fixing everything, I realized that every step matters when you see the whole picture. Trust is built where nobody looks, and you need to take small tasks seriously; then the work feels very different.

Professional Growth

When you work like me, a plugin is never just a small task or a sprint story. It is trust that lives in the part nobody sees. I remember a phrase from a college professor: when you do work without anyone watching, you actually prove your value and professionalism. That idea is important to me.

I have to admit that until last year I didn’t think about my work this way. Two old friendships wore down because of my deliveries, because I did not work properly with them, and they are good people. It was me failing to deliver things on time. Now I’m rebuilding, trying to be more professional on every project, and I feel happier with my progress.
