AI won't replace you. Not learning will.
Why learning matters
The best skill to learn right now is learning how to learn. With that skill and AI, you can learn anything. Hey everyone, this is Allan. In this video I want to talk about how important it is to be able to learn new things. I call it a foundation skill, a term I picked up from an article by Scott Young that I read today.
Fear of AI
One fear I see a lot among beginner developers, especially in the Brazilian programming community I follow, is the thought that AI will replace everyone in the future. It’s a genuine fear, but in my opinion it only appears when you don’t yet understand how coding with AI really works.
Task vs. job
I’ve only been coding for two years, so I wouldn’t call myself highly experienced, but I’m already able to work with AI. For me, this is the best time to code because AI makes any project a lot faster. Scott’s article, “What’s Still Worth Learning in a World with AI,” makes an important distinction: tasks are automated, not jobs. In my own work I’ve already delegated tasks, yet the job itself hasn’t disappeared. I still work on the same kinds of projects I’ve done for the past four years, but now I have a lot more leverage because I’m using AI.
Real‑world leverage
A recent example: a friend asked me to build a system to organize invoices for his family business. The system originally reduced ten hours of work to seven. After connecting it to AI through API calls with Claude Code, the same process now takes about forty minutes of my friend’s time, just enough for him to make decisions based on the data that AI organized. The tasks were delegated, but the job of deciding what to do remains.
The harder half
In my freelance work I still handle client relationships, planning, organizing, and system design. AI handles the simpler, repetitive coding parts, which feels like hiring a junior developer, sometimes even a smarter one. If I split the work in half, the part left for me is the harder half: system design, decision‑making, and understanding how whole systems work. Scott points out that when the simpler parts are automated, the remaining work requires higher skill levels.
Because of that, I decided to level up on the harder half. I bought a course on systems design, not because coding got harder, but because coding has become a task rather than the core of the job. I need to become better at the part that now matters most.
Dandelion vs. orchid
Scott uses a plant analogy: in an environment of change, it’s better to be the hardy dandelion than the delicate orchid. A dandelion grows almost anywhere, survives on its own, and is strong. An orchid needs a lot of care to survive. The point is that strong foundation skills make you adaptable to many environments.
AI‑enhanced learning
One of the most important foundations is the ability to learn, learning new things, learning what you already know, and learning deeply. The article also reminds us that AI is just technology, nothing new under the sun. Learning to use AI is similar to learning to use personal computers in the past. AI is a tool; it doesn’t replace you, it amplifies you. When you learn how to learn and then use AI to accelerate that learning, the effect compounds over time. I call this “AI‑enhanced learning”: you put in the effort, and AI makes the process faster and easier.
A concrete example
I’ve worked with websites for more than four years. I tried to teach Claude to convert an Elementor page into HTML so the page would be lighter and faster. Claude couldn’t understand Elementor’s structure, even with the best model at the time. Because I already knew front‑end development, I was able to guide the AI, make corrections, and create a workflow that now reliably converts any Elementor page to HTML. The AI now replicates the process automatically.
Previously, building a page in Elementor took hours, spending about half an hour on each of ten sections. With AI, the same page can be built in under thirty minutes, often much faster. This isn’t exaggeration; it’s a real productivity boost.
Takeaway
The main point is that learning how to learn is the best skill in a time of rapid change. It’s a foundation skill that lets you stay relevant as AI automates simpler tasks.
